In episode #78 of CPA Career Paths, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jeff Wilson II, CPA, entrepreneur, and founder of the W2 Group. Jeff’s journey through the accounting profession has been anything but conventional. From auditing government entities to creating his own firm and software company, Jeff has mastered the art of pivoting and entrepreneurship in the accounting world. Here’s a look at the highlights from our conversation and key lessons for anyone navigating their own CPA career.
Highlights from the Interview
- Leaving Auditing: Jeff’s last audit at a prison in Oklahoma was a turning point, revealing that auditing wasn’t providing the impact he sought. This led him to pivot toward more strategic financial analysis roles.
- Career Shift to the BEA: After auditing, Jeff worked at the Bureau of Economic Analysis, analyzing financial data for foreign subsidiaries. It was a fulfilling role that deepened his understanding of the global economy.
- Founding the W2 Group: Jeff launched the W2 Group, initially focused on tax services, which later grew into a full-service advisory firm, helping clients with tax strategies and business growth.
- Expanding into Tech: Jeff also founded Govv Rates, a software company aimed at helping small businesses with cost accounting and pricing strategies.
Transitioning from Audit to Strategic Business Insight
Jeff’s career took a major turn during his time as an auditor. His final audit, involving a visit to a prison in Oklahoma, marked a crucial moment. He realized that auditing wasn’t providing the kind of impact he wanted.
“It was a prison, right? And I thought to myself, this is not the kind of impact I want to make,” Jeff recalled. This insight led him to leave auditing and focus on roles that allowed him to analyze financial data and offer strategic business advice.
After leaving auditing, Jeff worked at the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), where he gained deeper insights into the global economy by analyzing foreign subsidiaries of domestic companies. This role provided a quieter, more fulfilling environment that allowed him to grow his expertise in financial data analysis.
Building the W2 Group: A Pivot to Entrepreneurship
But Jeff didn’t stop there. In search of something more dynamic, he launched the W2 Group, a tax and accounting firm that has grown into a full-service advisory business. The firm’s name, “W2 Group,” has a double meaning — a nod to Jeff’s initials and a clever reference to tax services.
The biggest lesson Jeff learned during this phase was the evolving role of accountants. “We are not just compliance experts anymore; we’re trusted business advisors,” he said. This shift has made the role of accountants much more multifaceted, blending compliance with strategy and operational insights.
Expanding into Tech: The Creation of Govv Rates
As if running a growing firm wasn’t enough, Jeff also founded Govv Rates, a software company designed to help small businesses manage their cost accounting more effectively.
“I saw small businesses struggling to price their services correctly, so I decided to build something to help them,” Jeff shared. His journey into tech was sparked by his frustration with the limitations of existing software. He dove into programming and product development, even teaching himself the skills necessary to build the software that addresses this gap in the market.
Key Advice for Advancing Your CPA Career
Throughout our conversation, Jeff shared key advice for anyone looking to advance in the accounting profession:
- Practice Excellence: “Try to be excellent at what you do, even if you don’t always get it right. Excellence is a habit, and it’s the key to long-term success.”
- Build Genuine Relationships: “Networking is important, but cultivating real relationships is what truly matters. It’s about getting to know people and being genuine.”
- Embrace Lifelong Learning: “Accounting is a profession that requires constant learning. Get comfortable with being a continuous learner and find what works best for you.”
Conclusion: Navigating Your CPA Path
Jeff’s career journey from audit to entrepreneurship and tech shows that there’s no one-size-fits-all path in the accounting profession. Whether you’re thinking about starting your own firm or exploring new industries, Jeff’s story is a powerful reminder that opportunities are everywhere — as long as you’re adaptable, willing to learn, and ready to seize them.
