Breaking Barriers in Accounting: Lessons from Anoop N. Mehta

I recently had the privilege of interviewing Anoop N. Mehta, CPA, CGMA, the immediate past chair of the AICPA and the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. In Episodes #18, #19, and #20 of the CPA Career Paths podcast, Anoop shared his incredible journey, from his formative years influenced by his father’s accounting legacy to becoming a leader in the accounting profession. He offered invaluable advice for young accountants, shared his thoughts on technology’s impact on the field, and emphasized the importance of embracing change and authenticity. Here are the key takeaways from our inspiring conversation.

A CPA Journey Rooted in Legacy

Anoop’s accounting journey began in high school, deeply influenced by his father, a chartered accountant who practiced across three continents. “I saw how respected my dad was in the community, how his clients trusted his advice. That’s what drew me to accounting,” Anoop explained. Further encouragement came from his high school teacher, Mr. Ed Miller, who made accounting relatable and applicable to real life.

But the road wasn’t always smooth. Anoop candidly shared how he initially struggled with the CPA exam, passing only one part during his first attempt. “I gave up for three years,” he admitted. Encouraged by his family, he resumed studying, this time with a different review course that matched his learning style. The result? “It was one of the proudest days of my life when I passed. I’ll never forget driving to my dad’s office and saying, ‘Dad, shake hands with a CPA.’

Takeaway: Your CPA journey might not be linear, and that’s okay. Persistence and finding the right support system are key.

Tackling Myths About Accounting

Anoop debunked several common misconceptions about the profession:

  • Accounting is boring: “It’s dynamic,” he said. “Every day is different. We’re not just number crunchers; we’re problem solvers and trusted advisors.”
  • You need to be great at math: “It’s about basic arithmetic and critical thinking, not complex equations.”
  • You’re stuck behind a desk: “I’m rarely behind a desk. Accounting involves collaboration, leadership, and creativity.”

Takeaway: Accounting offers variety, creativity, and a chance to make a tangible impact. Don’t let outdated stereotypes deter you.

The Role of Technology in Accounting

When discussing AI and technology, Anoop’s excitement was palpable. “AI isn’t here to replace us but to enhance our efficiency,” he emphasized. Comparing AI to tools like Excel, he noted, “Just as Excel became indispensable, AI can handle low-level tasks, freeing us for higher-value work like advising clients.

Anoop addressed concerns about how automation might impact entry-level accountants who traditionally learn from performing basic tasks. “Understanding the concepts of debits and credits remains crucial,” he said. “But as you progress, technical skills become less important than critical thinking, communication, and leadership.

Takeaway: Embrace AI and other technologies as tools to elevate your role. Focus on building foundational knowledge and developing soft skills.

The Power of Volunteering and Giving Back

Volunteering has been a cornerstone of Anoop’s career. He recalled joining the Maryland Association of CPAs (MACPA) shortly after passing his CPA exam. What started as a way to get discounted CPE courses led to opportunities that shaped his professional journey. “Sometimes, getting involved is as simple as raising your hand and asking, ‘How can I help?’” he shared.

Volunteering also allowed Anoop to mentor countless students and young professionals. “I’ve visited over 27 colleges and spoken to nearly 5,000 students,” he noted. “Every interaction is a chance to inspire the next generation of CPAs.

Takeaway: Volunteering not only benefits others but also helps you grow, expand your network, and find fulfillment.

Lessons from a Lifelong Career

Having spent over 40 years with one company, Anoop challenged the notion that staying in a “comfort zone” limits growth. “Comfortable doesn’t mean stagnant,” he clarified. “I was happy with the people and the work, but I continually sought opportunities to learn and take on new challenges.

Reflecting on his career, Anoop said he wished he had explored public accounting early on and learned more about technology. “Still, I have no regrets. Every experience taught me something valuable,” he said.

Takeaway: Growth comes from continuous learning and seizing opportunities, no matter where you are.

Advice for Young Accountants

Anoop’s advice for aspiring CPAs was simple yet profound:

  • Be genuine: “Authenticity builds trust and lasting relationships.”
  • Help others: “Lift those around you. It’s fulfilling and helps you grow, too.”
  • Stay curious: “Never stop learning. Our profession evolves daily.”
  • Have fun: “Enjoy the journey. Find joy in your work and connections.”

Takeaway: Success in accounting is about more than technical skills. It’s about relationships, curiosity, and a positive mindset.
