Interview Summary & Key Highlights
In Part 3 of my conversation with Cristina Hale on CPA Career Paths, Episode #112, we focused on leadership at its deepest level — building a practice from scratch, learning when to say no, and creating a people-first culture in public accounting. This part of the interview highlights:
- What it takes to rebuild credibility after every major move
- How Cristina built BDO Tampa’s tax practice from the ground up
- Why networking is really about relationships, not selling
- How leadership starts with empathy and trust
- What truly sustains a long, successful accounting career
Moving for Yourself — Not Just the Job
After years of relocating for work, Florida marked a turning point for Cristina.
“It was the first time in my life that I moved somewhere for me.”
Unlike previous moves driven by opportunity alone, Tampa felt like home immediately. While rebuilding professionally is never easy, this move came with clarity — she knew she wasn’t moving again.
“I have done my time. I’m staying where I am.”
That sense of personal alignment changed everything.
Building a Practice During Uncertainty
Cristina joined BDO Tampa in June 2020, when the world — and offices — were still largely shut down. At the time, the tax team consisted of only five people.
“It basically was starting from scratch.”
She recruited, interviewed, mentored, and networked relentlessly — often virtually — before ever meeting her full team in person. Over time, the practice grew to more than 30 professionals, built one hire and one relationship at a time.
“My goal in the first year was to build a brand — for myself and for BDO.”

Networking Isn’t Selling — It’s Relationships
Cristina openly admitted she once thought business development meant cold-calling and pitching services.
“That’s what I thought networking was.”
Instead, she learned that successful networking is simply about showing up, listening, and building trust. Tampa’s business community welcomed her with open arms — and she said yes to nearly every invitation.
“The more people I know, the more people I know.”
That mindset transformed networking from something intimidating into something energizing.
Leadership Through Care and Accountability
One of the most powerful moments of the conversation centered on how Cristina leads her teams.
“I took all the things I didn’t like — and I don’t do those.”
She shared simple questions like “Are you okay?” can change everything, and why transparency, respect, and realistic expectations matter.
“If your team feels cared for, they’ll do anything for you.”
Cristina believes accounting doesn’t have to be harsh to be excellent — it can be demanding and humane.

Say Yes Early — Then Earn the No
Cristina credits much of her success to saying yes before she felt ready.
“I’ve earned the right to say no now.”
Early in her career, she embraced discomfort, uncertainty, and growth. Later, she learned boundaries are just as important — but only after building a strong foundation.
Final Thoughts
Cristina’s journey shows that leadership isn’t about titles — it’s about how you treat people, how you show up, and how willing you are to grow alongside change.
