On CPA Career Paths Podcast – Episode #106, I hosted Doug Aguilera, CPA, CFF, CFE, CGMA and founder of Aguilera & Associates. Doug has over 30 years of experience, including time at Arthur Andersen, KPMG, and Ernst & Young, before launching his own forensic accounting practice in Palo Alto, California.
Interview Summary: Key Highlights & Takeaways
In this episode, I explored a fascinating and lesser-known CPA career path—forensic accounting. I had the pleasure of speaking with Doug Aguilera, a seasoned forensic accountant who shared how accounting can lead to investigative, high-impact work far beyond traditional audit and tax roles. From uncovering fraud to serving as an expert witness, this conversation highlighted how CPAs can build careers that are intellectually challenging, flexible, and deeply meaningful.

Why Doug Chose Accounting (Twice)
Doug’s path into accounting wasn’t carefully planned—and that’s what makes it relatable.
“I chose accounting two different times for two different reasons… lucky me, it turned out to be a good decision.”
- He enjoyed accounting in high school
- Later returned to college after working as a carpenter
- Viewed accounting as a “money degree” with reliable career prospects
His story is a reminder that you don’t need a perfect plan to build a successful CPA career.
Discovering Forensic Accounting
Doug described forensic accounting as the most engaging work of his career:
“Everything that I work on has a story.”
He explained that forensic services typically fall into two areas:
- Internal investigations (fraud, embezzlement, financial manipulation)
- Litigation support (expert witness work, disputes between companies)
Unlike audit or tax, forensic accounting is event-driven, not seasonal.
“You never know… you might get a call at nine at night asking to attend a meeting the next morning.”

Big Firm Experience vs. Solo Practice
Doug shared valuable insight on transitioning from a Big Four firm to running a solo practice.
What he loved about Big Firms:
- Deep resources
- Large teams
- Complex, multinational cases
Why he left:
“I really enjoyed doing the work hands-on.”
As a sole practitioner, Doug works directly with documents, transactions, and evidence—strengthening his credibility in depositions and trials.
“It’s easier to advocate for your opinion when you know firsthand all the information.”

What Makes Forensic Accounting Unique
Doug compared forensic work to solving a puzzle without the picture on the box:
- Incomplete records
- Missing financial statements
- Sometimes only bank statements—or cash
“You take what’s available and build from there.”
He also highlighted alternative career options, including law enforcement, the FBI, and government agencies, where CPAs are highly valued.
Key Career Lessons from Doug
- Accounting offers endless career flexibility
- Specialized skills increase professional value
- Hands-on expertise builds confidence and credibility
- Non-traditional paths can lead to the most fulfilling work
