From Chapman to CPA: Real Talk on Passing the CPA Exam Before Work Starts

In this episode #108, I had the pleasure of speaking with Hayden Moore, CPA, about his journey from Chapman University to public accounting, passing all four CPA exam sections in just nine months, and why taking the CPA exam before starting full-time work can be a career-defining move. We also talked candidly about test-taking strategy, CPA prep materials, firm sponsorships, and what people often misunderstand about the CPA exam.

Highlights you’ll take away from this episode:

  • Why FAR should usually be your first CPA exam section
  • How Hayden passed all four sections before working full time
  • Why CPA success is more about strategy than experience
  • How to get CPA study materials paid for by firms
  • The career implications of delaying the CPA license

Meet the Guest: Hayden Moore, CPA

I hosted Hayden Moore, CPA, who started his career in tax at a mid-tier firm before transitioning into audit at EY. Hayden passed the CPA exam in 2022 and is licensed in California, Massachusetts, and New York. He’s also the founder of 4 for 4 CPA (4for4cpa.org), a platform designed to help CPA candidates navigate the exam process and cut through negativity surrounding the profession.

Why Hayden Chose Accounting

Hayden didn’t always plan to be an accounting major. He shared that he initially thought about engineering but ultimately wanted the most technical business foundation possible.

“I wanted to understand the technical side of business — financial reporting, the P&L, the balance sheet — so that one day I could really fine-tune that side of my skills.”

That mindset shaped his long-term approach to the CPA and his career decisions.

How Hayden Passed All Four CPA Exams in 9 Months

One of the most impressive parts of Hayden’s story is that he passed all four CPA exam sections before starting full-time work.

“You’re never going to be better at taking tests than coming out of undergrad.”

His approach included:

  • Starting with FAR to get the largest section out of the way
  • Studying full-time while finishing school
  • Focusing heavily on multiple-choice questions
  • Using Becker and trusting the prep material

“The CPA exam is a test-taking strategy. It’s not just accounting knowledge.”

CPA Exam Strategy That Actually Works

Hayden emphasized something many candidates overlook: work experience doesn’t automatically translate to CPA exam success.

“Just because someone works in tax or audit doesn’t mean the exam will be easier. The CPA is theoretical.”

His key advice:

  • Don’t underestimate the exam — regardless of job performance
  • Lean fully into your CPA prep software
  • Build a review cycle focused on repetition
  • Treat the CPA as a skill set, not just a credential

Firm Sponsorship, Bonuses, and Timing

We also talked about strategy beyond studying.

“If you have a job offer, most firms will pay for your CPA materials — even before you start.”

Passing the CPA exam early can also come with major financial upside, including larger CPA bonuses and fewer career roadblocks later on.

Final Thoughts & Call to Action

This episode is a reminder that the CPA license opens doors — but timing and strategy matter. Hayden’s journey shows what’s possible when you approach the CPA exam intentionally and early.
