From CPA to Coach: How Ela Bijlani Found Her Purpose in Leadership

In episode #83 of the CPA Career Paths podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ela Bijlani, CPA, founder of Consulting and Coaching Solutions, LLC. Ela’s journey is nothing short of inspiring—from international student to SEC reporting director, and now a leadership and executive coach. We discussed her transition from public accounting to private industry, her struggles and triumphs earning the CPA license while raising a child, and the transformative power of strong leadership.

🌟 Key Takeaways:

  • The influence of great mentors and professors can shape your entire career path.
  • Leadership is a skill—not a title—and it’s often overlooked in traditional accounting tracks.
  • Communication and connection are critical for career success in accounting.
  • It’s okay to be different—your accent is part of your story, not a weakness.

Ela’s CPA Journey: More Than Just Numbers

Ela didn’t set out to be an accountant. As an international student, she chose accounting as a practical path that offered job security and the ability to support her family. But what truly steered her into the profession were her college professors who recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue it.

“Sometimes you really have to find yourself and find what you’re good at. If someone says ‘I see potential in you’—that’s huge.”

From Public to Private: Discovering SEC Reporting

Ela started in public accounting but soon realized estate and trust work wasn’t her passion. It was a recruiter who introduced her to SEC reporting, an area she had never heard of in school. That leap opened doors to work directly with top executives and tackle complex technical accounting challenges.

“I had to read guidance, write memos, and interface with CFOs. It was much more than just debits and credits—and I loved that.”

The Power of Great Leadership

One of the most impactful parts of Ela’s journey came from working under an exceptional leader—someone who cared about her both professionally and personally.

“She knew my CPA exam was about to expire and told me to fly out and apply for the extension. That level of care? That’s leadership.”

Ela emphasizes that technical expertise doesn’t equal leadership, and that emotional intelligence and people skills are what truly elevate a professional.

Coaching the Next Generation of Accounting Leaders

Inspired by her own experiences, Ela pursued coaching and now helps other professionals lead more effectively. Her advice for new professionals entering the accounting world?

✅ Actionable Advice:

  • Develop communication skills early—practice public speaking and storytelling.
  • Don’t just crunch numbers—understand them, so you can explain and advise.
  • Take initiative—connect with clients and learn their pain points.
  • Embrace growth—leadership isn’t innate, it’s learned.

“Good leaders are coachable. They want feedback, and they’re committed to growing.”

Final Thoughts: It’s Okay to Be Different

As an international student myself, I deeply resonated with Ela’s message on embracing our differences.

“People lean in when you speak with an accent—not because they’re confused, but because they’re listening.”

That insight completely changed how I viewed public speaking. It’s not about hiding who we are—it’s about owning our voice.
