From Staff to Managing Partner: Carla McCall’s Guide to Building a Purpose-Driven CPA Career

I had the pleasure of speaking with Carla McCall, CPA, CGMA, in Episode #102 of the CPA Career Paths podcast. Carla is the Managing Partner at AAFCPAs and the immediate past chair of the AICPA. In this episode, she shared her CPA journey from starting at a small firm to leading a top 100 accounting firm, along with actionable career advice.

Here are a few standout takeaways:

  • Don’t wait to get your CPA license
  • Small firms offer incredible learning and leadership opportunities
  • Interview the firm as much as they interview you
  • Career growth depends on self-advocacy and specific feedback
  • Align your job with your values for long-term fulfillment

Start Early: Why Timing Matters for the CPA Exam

When Carla graduated, becoming a CPA was simply the expectation. She didn’t take the exam immediately and regretted the delay. “I took vacation time to study,” she said, emphasizing how much more responsibility builds the longer you wait. Her message was clear: “The more you wait, the harder it gets. Just get it done early.”

Big Four Isn’t the Only Path

Carla started her career at a small firm in Connecticut, gaining hands-on experience in tax, audit, and client communication early on. “In a small firm, you get client contact almost immediately,” she explained. This diversity laid the foundation for her future as a managing partner.

She challenged the common belief that the Big Four is the golden ticket: “There isn’t just one path to success. Everyone’s drivers are different.”

Interview Tips: Ask the Right Questions

Carla flipped the script on interviews: “You’re interviewing them too.” She advises candidates to:

  • Research the firm’s website and social media
  • Ask intentional questions about culture, advancement, and values
  • Make sure your values align with theirs

She added, “The right fit allows you to be your authentic self. That’s when the magic happens.”

Navigating Mergers and Firm Structures

With increasing M&A activity in the accounting industry, Carla encouraged professionals to ask about firm ownership and vision. Whether it’s private equity, ESOPs, or independent firms, “Know where you plug in best.”

How to Move Up: Own Your Career Growth

Carla offered powerful advice for advancement:

  • Be your own advocate
  • Understand the competencies needed at each level
  • Ask for specific, real-time feedback tied to promotion metrics

“Don’t leave a blank slate for feedback,” she said. “Be specific so it helps you grow.”
