Insights from Blaise Wabo, CPA on Accounting, Cybersecurity, and Career Growth

I had the pleasure of speaking with Blaise Wabo on Episode #16 & #17 of my podcast, CPA Career Paths. Blaise is a thought leader at a cybersecurity firm, with a career path that combines accounting and technology in ways that are both inspiring and practical. From his roots in Cameroon to becoming a CPA and excelling in IT audits, Blaise’s journey offers valuable lessons for anyone pursuing accounting or cybersecurity. Here’s a closer look at what makes his story so compelling.

Finding Your Own Path

Blaise’s journey into accounting began as a non-negotiable—his father, a CPA, required all six of his children to pursue accounting. But Blaise added his own twist by double-majoring in Computer Information Systems. He turned what could have been a narrow path into a unique and rewarding career. As he put it, “Even if a path is chosen for you, find a way to make it your own and add value.

The Foundation of Accounting

While Blaise didn’t enjoy every aspect of accounting—taxes being a notable example—he valued how the discipline shaped his thinking. “Accounting has a way of making you think differently. It changes how you see numbers, business, and strategy,” he explained. This foundational skill set has stayed with him throughout his career, proving that accounting is more than just numbers.

Pushing Boundaries in College

Blaise graduated with a 3.78 GPA and two majors in just three years. How? By taking 21 credits per semester and attending summer school. “I didn’t want to fall behind my peers back home in Cameroon,” he said. His determination paid off, setting him up for early success.

The Big Four Experience

Blaise started his career at KPMG, where he worked on high-pressure projects. The workload was grueling—100-hour weeks were the norm—but the experience was invaluable. He credits his time at KPMG with building his professional network and providing a strong foundation for future roles. “If you want to become a partner or CFO, the Big Four is a great place to start,” Blaise advised, though he also acknowledged the demands on work-life balance.

Thriving in Cybersecurity

Blaise’s current role at a cybersecurity firm combines his CPA background with his love of technology. “In a digital world, security is everything. If your systems go down, your business crumbles,” he explained.

For young CPAs interested in technology, Blaise highlighted IT audits as a promising niche. “There’s a high demand for CPAs who can bridge the gap between finance and technology,” he noted.

Overcoming CPA Exam Challenges

Blaise’s journey to becoming a CPA wasn’t easy—he took the exam 11 times before passing. Balancing work, family, and studying was tough, but he persisted. “I studied from midnight to 7 a.m., then worked a full-time job,” he shared. His story is a reminder that perseverance pays off.

Teaching Financial Literacy at Home

Blaise’s dedication to financial education extends to his children. His 12-year-old already owns vending machines and manages investments. “I teach my kids how money works because it’s a skill they’ll need for life,” he said. This approach contrasts with his own upbringing, where college was non-negotiable. Instead, Blaise gives his kids the freedom to choose their paths while equipping them with essential skills.

The Versatility of a CPA License

One of the key messages Blaise shared was the endless possibilities that come with a CPA license. “You don’t have to stick to traditional roles like tax or audit. Accounting opens doors to business strategy, advisory, IT audits, and more,” he said. For young professionals, he recommends exploring various career paths and seeking mentors to guide their journey.

Building a Long-Term Career

Blaise has been with his current firm for over 10 years, a rarity in today’s job market. He’s now a partner, a role he describes as both rewarding and challenging. “Finding a company that aligns with your values and goals can lead to long-term success,” he said.

A Final Note of Encouragement

For those considering a career in accounting, Blaise emphasized its potential for impact and fulfillment. “What we do matters. Whether it’s helping a business stay compliant or protecting clients from cyber threats, accounting is a field where you can make a real difference,” he concluded.
