Why I Chose to Become a CPA: A Conversation with Elizabeth Burkhalter, CPA

In this episode #101 of CPA Career Paths, I had the pleasure of speaking with Elizabeth (Liz) Burkhalter, CPA, the newly promoted Director of CPA Pipeline at the AICPA. Liz shared her powerful journey from a first-generation college student to a CPA leader working to shape the future of the profession. Her story is one of intrinsic motivation, clear purpose, and continuous growth. Here are some highlights and takeaways from our inspiring conversation:

  • Choosing the CPA license as a way to open doors and set herself apart.
  • The value of being intrinsically motivated to pursue licensure.
  • Addressing the CPA pipeline gap and industry hiring trends.
  • Skills that make accountants stand out in today’s profession.
  • Tips for building work-life integration, especially as a working mom.

Why Liz Became a CPA

Liz credits a high school teacher—a CPA himself—as a key influence. He showed her the power of the credential not just for career growth, but for financial stability and long-term family success.

“I wanted to open as many opportunities as I possibly can for the future of my career.”

Unlike others who waited for an employer’s push, Liz was intrinsically motivated. For her, getting those three letters wasn’t optional—it was essential.

Navigating a Confusing Industry Trend

We discussed a common concern: how can there be a talent shortage in accounting while layoffs are making headlines? Liz broke it down with clarity:

“One firm’s layoffs don’t mean the profession isn’t hiring. There are firms down the street that are still hungry for talent.”

She reminded us that the pipeline problem is real, but it’s also a matter of aligning the right talent with the right opportunity.

Skills That Future CPAs Need

Liz emphasized that beyond technical know-how, future CPAs need:

  • A digital mindset
  • Comfort with AI and new technologies
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities
  • Solid time management and Excel skills

“Shocker—it’s not just debits and credits anymore.”

Her tip? Tell a mentor your goals and ask for accountability and real-time feedback. And yes, podcasts and audiobooks count as upskilling!

Balancing Work and Life as a CPA Mom

As a mom of two, Liz has learned to set boundaries.

“You have my undivided attention at work, and when I’m home, I give that same energy to my kids.”

She encourages working professionals to be intentional about time and to communicate clearly with both their families and their employers.

Final Thoughts

Liz’s career path is a reminder that becoming a CPA opens doors far beyond audits and tax returns. It builds confidence, financial literacy, and professional freedom. Her advice is clear: find your why, stay curious, and invest in yourself.

If you’re on the path to becoming a CPA or exploring what’s next in your accounting career, don’t do it alone.
